Our History
The founders of First Nations Bank of Canada had a vision to develop a federally-chartered bank serving Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people throughout Canada. The Bank was conceived and developed by Indigenous People, for Indigenous People and regards itself as an important step toward Indigenous economic self-sufficiency.
The strategic directive of the founding shareholders was to grow the Bank and increase Indigenous ownership to the point that the Bank would be controlled by a widely held group of Indigenous shareholders. Effective Nov 1, 2009 that objective became a reality and now the Bank is over 80% owned and controlled by Indigenous shareholders from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Quebec.
With the support of its Indigenous shareholders, the Bank has demonstrated consistent growth and profitability. Bank services are available through a network of full service branches (five on reserve), Community Banking Centres and electronic banking channels.

Added new shareholders YT, MB AND QC (EQUITY INCREASE $3.1 MILLION)
2003
Opened fourth full service bank WINNIPEG, MB Opened second Community Banking Centre CREE NATION OF NEMASKA, QC
2007
Opened fifth full service branch WHITEHORSE, YT Added new shareholders NU, NWT, YT, SK & QC (EQUITY INCREASE $14 MILLION) Entered into a 7 year Services Agreement with TD Bank
2008
Opened sixth full service bank MEADOW LAKE, SK
2009
Transfer of control of First Nations Bank to the Indigenous shareholders
2010
Opened seventh full service branch in Iqaluit, Nunavut
2012
Completed our transition to a completely independent Financial Institution
2014
Opened eighth full service branch in Yellowknife NWT. Opened two new concept Community Banking Centres in Baker Lake, NU and Pond Inlet, NU.
2015
Community Banking Centre opened in Kugluktuk, NU, August 18, 2015.
2018
Community Banking Centre opened Pangnirtung, NU, November 7, 2018.
2019
Opened ninth full service branch in Enoch Cree nation, May 1, 2019.
Opened Community Banking Centre in Arviat, NU, May 15, 2019.
Opened Community Banking Centre in Whapmagoostui, QC, July 30, 2019
